Quick report

-Hiked from Lake McDonald Lodge to Lower Snyder Lake, climbed up NW face Mt Edwards to a high point just over 9040', descended via the west face. -No recent avalanche activity and no signs of instability. Felt comfortable on some very exposed terrain. -Trace to 2" of recent snow that is faceting and resting on top of the surface crust. Not good if this layer gets preserved and buried. -Surface crust was rarely supportable in boots and extended up to 9000'. But the snowpack is so consolidated that boot penetration was usually limited to ankle/calf deep. -Snow underneath the surface crust was faceted. -Calm to light SW winds with no wind loading. -Mostly overcast skies until late afternoon when it cleared off. Clouds moved in again later in the night and brought some light snow flurries. -Temperatures remained sub-freezing.
