flew a large portion of the central chugach and observed quite a few natural avalanches with impressive propagation on all aspects in the upper elevations that seemed to indicate a persistent weak layer problem, most likely from 1/26 in all 3 forecast zones, though we did not see much of the maritime zone. it seemed features that had been loaded by wind had put sufficient stress on this weak layer to avalanche naturally but there were plenty of other crowns in non wind loaded areas that led us to believe it was not a simple windslab problem. some of the most impressive avalanches were on the Thompson Pass corridor and Tonsina Glacier area. Other than that, the glaciers seemed to have fairly low coverage with lots of open crevasses and certain popular heli ski runs had exposed rocks but it’s still February.
