Quick report
Temperature was about 5 degrees F, clear, no wind. New Snow of about 6 ish inches Traveled up the established skin track Did not observe instability down below An avalanche was triggered by something else from above us.
Avalanche
We left the parking area below Hatcher Pass Lodge, near the gate. We decided to ascend the established skin track on the west face of the lower Marmot Ridge. The plan was to stay out of the isolated areas that looked cross loaded. At around 3500' I looked up and saw what appeared to be a not so small avalanche charging down the hill right at us. I alerted my partner and deployed my air bag. Fortunately the slide stopped short of us and turned down the chute. We moved to the side and switched our beacons into search mode. My partner stayed to the side while I conducted a beacon search of the slide debris. No signal was detected. We transitioned and left the area. We never saw or spoke with who ever triggered it. The crown appeared to be along the ridge, just below and to the lookers right of the most prominent, west facing false peak/chute as seen from the parking area. I dont know what layer it broke in but it ultimately ran on the bottom basal ice. While we were comfortable with the choices we were making we failed to account for other riders poking around above us. I do not know the trigger mechanism, though I doubt it was a remote trigger. Id like to think that who ever triggered it didnt know they dropped something on peoples head otherwise they would have come over and checked on us.
