I skinned up to Tuckerman Ravine today to check out the distribution of the recent snow and potentially ski one of the gullies if conditions permitted. The Tuckerman Ravine trail above Hermit Lake and everywhere I traveled in the bowl consisted of a uniform ~4-5" of new unconsolidated snow on top of a crust layer. Winds were calm and there was no evidence of wind loading or snow transport. The new snow was poorly bonded to the crust and easily sluffed off on test slopes. I figured this hazard would be manageable due to the unconsolidated nature of the new snow, so I decided to climb and ski Lobster Claw. As expected, I encountered moderate sluffing, but it was manageable and the new snow made for enjoyable turns. Next, I climbed and skied Right Gully with slightly different results. The composition of the snow was the same, however, temperatures had warmed and wetted the surface snow causing it to become more cohesive. This lead to significant sluffing and what would probably be considered a D1 wet loose slide. The debris from this settled in the upper section of Lunch Rocks. No one else was in the gully or runout.
