Beneath our newest snow (10-15cm) is a varying thickness melt freeze crust. In some spots it’s thin about 1F minus in hardness, while others (like a pm lap on S aspects on Glory) it was much stouter. Just below this newest crust is a thin layer of faceted snow, that is weak and will likely not support a heavy load.
My course group dug today at 9,000’ on a South aspect. HS 145cm. CT7 RP Q2 down approx 14cm - failure was on the facets below current interface. ECTP19 down 60cm on the Jan. 4 layer. The Jan. 4 layer was still weak with dry faceted snow in this location, and the column failed with high propagation propensity.
Cracking below newest MFcr along Mt. Ely E ridge. Easy propagation and failure on steep test slopes in leeward terrain, 30cm deep - running on N/O interface.
