Quick report
We toured to the Pastoral Valley through Taylor Creek and saw dozens of glide cracks all over the mountains, all aspects. I didn't notice any fresh glide avalanches in Turnagain Pass, but there was at least one new one in Summit Lake. I was surprised not to find any surface hoar in the snowpit we dug at 3,400', get more on the snowpit in the snowpack section. It seems like the weak layers of surface hoar at adjusting to the weight of the snowpack over time. There is still uncertainty and surface hoar is a very tricky weak layer that is hard to trust. The breakable crust below 2,600' was relatively easy to ski, which was a delightful surprise.
Weather
It was cold today, in the single digits F at the parking lot, but it felt slightly warmer at Taylor Pass. The skies were mostly clear. There was just a light east wind so the day felt pretty comfortable despite being in the shade all day.
Snowpack
There was 2" of new snow on top of a breakable crust at the parking lot. The crust disappeared around 2,600'. We travelled through soft snow for a while, but there was some wind affected snow below the new snow at 3,000' to the pass. We dug a snowpit at 3,400' on a northeast facing slope in the Pastoral Valley where the total height of snow was just over 2'. I was surprised that I didn't find any surface hoar (doesn't mean it wasn't there). There was a weak layer of near surface facets about 1' below the surface that failed in the compression test, but didn't propagate (CT11 SC, ECTN12).
