Snowpack
- Instability Comment
-
As noted in numerous observations already, large surface hoar crystals forming in the shade, though a lot of variability in this. We found full fingernail size crystals while out on a hike today. Starting at around 6800ft where there was about 6-8 inches of snow on the ground.

Above 8000ft in the shade on the mahogany ridge the snow was unconsolidated, loose, and faceting at the surface so we traversed over to the SW aspects to hike up in more consolidated sun effected snow.

Just 20ft over in almost the same aspect the snow could be found without any surface hoar, so there the variability that has been talked about.
