I saw no recent avalanches and could barely trigger a small wind slab as I headed into the Mammoth Lakes Basin between storms.

  • Aside from the snowpack and stability information in other sections, it's worth noting that creeks are still open and coverage is still thin and variable.
I stomped on many soft wind slabs near and above treeline, with only localized cracking underfoot in a few instances. I managed to kick off a thin, baby slab on a test slope.

Clouds increased and light snowfall returned in the afternoon. Winds increased with elevation and throughout the day. They were overall light with moderate gusts.

Snowpack

Below treeline was dust on breakable crust. Facets under the crust. All aspects.

Near treeline, stubborn, soft wind drifts sat directly on soft facets. Despite that, there was little feedback from this structure - just some localized cracking. Slabs were 20 - 44 cm thick and did not stretch far down this hill before tapering. Windward slopes were stripped to a thin crust with facets underneath. Sheltered slopes without wind-drifted snow were just facets for the top 20 cm of the snowpack.

Above treeline, windward slopes were wind-stripped. There was a much less consistent snowpack over the rocky ground cover. Leeward slopes typically had 10-30cm 4F wind slabs over thin layer of 2mm DF over 1F-P Crust. Under that crust: 1-2mm F FC. I got sudden CT results with easy to moderate force in the DFs and the FCs. Not propagation.
