Ophir Peak

We found a moderate overnight refreeze in the Chickadee Ridge/Ophir Peak area today. Snow coverage is rapidly melting and disappearing throughout this area on all aspects and elevations. Snow surfaces ranged from firm in open areas to softer in treed locations. The open northerly aspects of Ophir Peak were firm to very firm in the mid to late morning hours and we used ski crampons to ascent to the top. We skied some southerly aspects which had good soft snow conditions in the late morning, although snow coverage is patchy with lots of traversing and sections of dirt and rock present. Northerly aspects were mostly firm near and above 9000 feet with more breakable crusts at mid to lower elevations. There was a short window of supportable soft spring snow on sun exposed slopes before they became mushy and unsupportable.
