Quick report
Very springlike snowpack today. Traveled 7000’ and above, east and west aspects. Rain crust to 8000’-semi-supportive in morning than got damp with afternoon sun. Still low snow cover with lumpy logs, exposed brush and open water at creek crossings. Snow conditions varied from supportive hard crusts, to breakable crusts, wet mash potatoes, frozen hummus, “trap door” isothermal spots near logs and rocks, everything but dry snow/powder. Main hazards were low snow cover, funky snow conditions, and afternoon wet loose problems. Steeper turns on an east aspect at 1pm at 7500’ produced roller balls. The strong sun was shedding any remaining caked snow in trees at 8500’.
Avalanche
Did not see any wet slabs, or any crowns today, but lots of pin wheels, roller balls, cinnamon rolls.
