Quick report
The morning started out overcast and calm. As I ascended above 7500’ I observed 9” or 10” of new snow sitting right side up on the late March, early April crust. The temperature was in the low twenties. Above 8000’ I observed light to moderate WNW winds and the associated wind transported snow. By early afternoon it was snowing at the rate of about an inch per hour and the WNW winds increased to moderate/strong , especially above 8000’ and near ridge lines. The combination of falling snow, snow available for transport, and strong winds produced wind slabs on east and northeast facing terrain that were easily triggered by the weight of a skier. Because of all the red flags and poor stability that I observed, I made conservative choices while out in the mountains today.
