Snowpack

We went to Castle Peak today.  Most easterly aspects warmed quickly this morning with a marginal refreeze overnight mostly due to radiational cooling.    We found a 3'' melt freeze crust near the trailhead that was 1F hard.  Mostly sunny skies in the morning turned mostly cloudy by late morning.  Southwest winds were moderate to strong along ridges above 8500'.  This increased cloud cover and winds kept upper elevation west aspects firm and limited/slowed wet snow development on other aspects and elevations into the late morning hours prolonging supportable snow conditions.  Relatively smooth spring snow conditions were found on south and southwest aspects through the late morning hours.
