Big Blue Valley

Petra Szekeres, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Dug a snow pit April 17 at noon, 1400 m elev, NW facing planar slope, ~30 degree, 50% sun exposure. CTM14 resistant planar, 10cm down CTH22 resistant planar 20cm down Shovel cut down back: Resistant planar 50cm down Resistant planar 70cm down 5cm (laminated) crust ~100cm deep (crust depth varied even within snow pit), facets with some rounds (naked eye). Another crust layer, 115cm deep, 4cm thick. Appears to be well bonded at this aspect and elevation. Top of a planar slope, well supported. Blue bird, few degrees below zero, wind light ~5km coming from the south (very wind shielded area as we learned after ascending further!). Had no whumphs all day and did not observe any recent avalanche activity, a few sloughs on south facing slopes.
