Quick Observation

Skied the Cleveland to Feather traverse from the Summit parking lot. Melt freeze crust on E and SE aspects from the road up to the NE glacier area (1300-1400m) in the morning. We noted a decent size 2 slab avalanche on a convex slope (pic edited to enhance snow details). This was recent, but more than 24h old. It seemed to be a collateral slide triggered by another smaller avalanche above, presumably triggered from snow releasing under the cornices at ridge top. The debris pile was about 3 meters high and came down with enough force to push up and away from the slope on flat ground. A good reminder to watch out for overhead hazards and stay away from terrain traps! Overall, N and NE aspects still had dry snow. No signs of instability during our tour, possibly due to colder overnight temperatures and very slight clouds preventing constant heavy solar radiation. Skiing was good down Cleveland SE and OK down to the NW glacier (much more dense snow, turning to crust near tree line). During the traverse to Feather, snow on S aspect was getting wet down to about 20cm at mid afternoon. We noted lots of pinwheeling on steeper solar aspects and some point release slides dating from previous days. Found the best snow of the day in the North bowl of Feather. 10-15cm of soft dry snow sitting on a more settled base made for a fun short lap before heading out.
