Quick report

We remotely triggered a D1 windslab near the summit of Jove Peak. Nobody was caught. A few ft below the ridge, there was 1 inch of unconsolidated, dry snow on top of a bulletproof crust. The ridge itself held lots of wind drifted snow, with shooting cracks and collapsing abound. The slide was triggered near the summit — we saw the shooting crack begin about 20 ft away from our party and trigger the slide 50 ft away. The slab was 12” deep, 30 ft wide, and only entrained snow from the upper 10 ft of the ridge. It ran about 100 ft (R1/2). We were headed to ski the NW glade, but opted to ski a low angle line down the East side of the face instead. We saw no signs of instability once we were 5 feet below the ridge — just 1 inch of dust on crust. Sledding Smith Brook was very hazardous due to open creeks.

Remotely triggered windslab. Shooting crack in green, upper part of the runout in pink. Lousy pic since it was triggered remotely and slid around the corner from our position.
