Quick report

We found approx 2 0 cms of surface facets in N facing treed areas. These provided good skiing in untracked areas. We travelled on the N aspects of fireplug today, looking for good skiing in sheltered terrain, trying to assess surface conditions ahead of tomorrows storm, and searching for weak layers in areas with a shallow snowpack.

Cloudy skies decreased during the day. Light winds out of SW with moderate ridgetop winds.

Snowpack

HS generally less than 120cms in this area. Upper snowpack consists of near surface facets on top of Jan 3 rain crust. Mid snowpack is a series of crusts and facet layers. Lower snowpack consists of strong rounds and melt forms. The old depth hoar is rounding in deeper areas. In shallow areas, less than 1m, large faceted grains can still be found in bottom 20-30cms. We dug multiple test profiles on N aspects at 8500'. Although we saw multiple CT results in the upper snowpack, none of these layers propagated or produced significant results in ECT. Although there are currently no layers of concern within the snowpack, weak structure in the upper snowpack could produce avalanche concerns with future loading during our next storm cycle.
