Snowpack
We went to Johnson Canyon today to look at lower elevation terrain and snowpack. The trailhead sits at 6400' with our high point for the day up to 7600'. Snow coverage is minimal at the bottom of the canyon and road. We found adequate snow coverage on northerly aspects with good travel conditions. 4 to 5'' of soft near surface facets existed on wind protected slopes on top of a firm and thick rain crust. Snow coverage gets thin with lots of bushes and trees poking up near and below 7000', but the previous rain crust remains strong and supportable. Signs of previous wind scouring existed in all open and wind exposed locations. Southerly aspects had minimal coverage throughout this area with E-SE and W aspects having more transitional wet snow on the surface.
