Time: 12:50, elevation - 5,380, aspect - 285 degrees, slope angle - 38 degrees, snow depth - 200 cm Sky - overcast, moderate rain, temp - 33 degrees, wind SW @ 5 - 10 mph There was 3 - 4" of new snow which fell overnight. Purpose of pit was to compare conditions to those observed by the patrol on an adjacent slope. on 2/22/25. we did not observe the saturated layer about the crust that they found. We did observe a crust at 65 cm from the surface and another one 135 cm from the surface. There appeared to be a faceted layer about 5 cm below each of these crusts. We did a shovel shear test and a compression test. The SST broke with moderate pressure on the 65 cm crust. The failure plane was Q1. The results of the compression test was a CT 10 @ 25 cm and a CT 30 @ 65 cm. These initiated but did not move.
Avalanche
When traversing away from our pit to our intended descent route we triggered two wet loose slides. These were about 3" thick and ran about 100 vf to the treeline. They continued to entrain snow as the slides progressed. Estimate of size was R 1.5, D 1.0. None of us were caught.
