Decided to boot hike up to Judah today to check out the snow pack Summer trail up to the meadow was dicey, crampons would have been helpful. Continuous snow coverage started around 7500ft. Snow depth increased to around 12” on final approach up to Judah. Trace amounts of new snow from this mornings flurries. Dug an informal shovel pit at 8000ft east side of Judah. Snow pack measured around 14” in this area and was comprised of multiple layers of faceted snow and crusts with a more solid 4” top layer. While digging the pit, on the final chop of my shovel the firm 4” top slab slid freely on a layer of very fine sugary snow. I don’t know the technical terms but this was concerning find. Felt like a consistent snow pack while boot packing around. This area did not seem to be as affected by last weeks scouring winds definitely a snow pack thatneeds monitoring with future snowfall
