Snow Observation Report Location: Crystal area, Lolo Pass Elevation: 5,500 feet Aspect: East/Southeast Date/Time: Saturday, 2:00 PM Weather Conditions: • Cloud Cover: Broken • Temperature: 20°F (-6.7°C) • Wind: Mild • Precipitation: Light snow flurries Snowpack Observations: • Snow Depth: 125 cm at pit location • Surface Conditions: Fresh powder overlaying older layers Extended Column Test (ECT): • No failure observed within 30 hits • Forced failure revealed resistant planar characteristics at the rain crust layer beneath the fresh powder Snowpack Hardness Profile: • Fresh Powder: Fist-soft • Progressing Layers: Finger, Finger+, and Pen-hard to the ground Notable Layers: • Buried Sugar Snow Layer: Non-reactive during testing Hazards: • No immediate instability detected, but monitor conditions as snow accumulates or weather shifts. Notes: Overall, the snowpack shows good stability under current conditions. The resistant planar failure at the rain crust layer is worth monitoring in case of increased loading.
