Quick Observation

A great way to spend a sunny Saturday in the North Rockies! We dug a quick pit on a north facing slope at 1800m around treeline to see if we could find any of the surface hoar that has been reported in other parts of the region but found a very stable looking snowpack with no weak layers. We did an extended column test and had no results. No whumpfing or cracking or recent avalanches in the area either (good views into lots of start zones and avalanche paths!) The best skiing was on shady east and north facing slopes that saw little sun. Wherever the sun had had just a little more impact we found a hard suncrust buried by about 5cm of new snow that didnt make for good skiing. We took advantage of the decreased avalanche hazard and skied 3 laps in an east facing avalanche path.
