Quick Observation
Mackenzie SAR was on Morfee Mountain on both Saturday and Sunday for avalanche training. We stayed near the Morfee Mountain cabin. There was 10-30cm of snow between 1400m-1500m sitting on a thick crust 4-15cm thick. Snowpack was very stable underneath the crust with consistent freeze-thaw layers. In the alpine snow was wind packed with an almost constant wind layer throughout the entire snowpack. Shear tests on S-SW slopes showed failure of the top layer of snow only under considerable force. There was no evidence of natural avalanches on any slopes visible from the east side of Morfee Mountain. There was, however, cornice failure observed in the alpine.
