Quick report
Benign weather and generally stable avalanche conditions were the theme of the day in the Owens River Headwaters Wilderness.
- The only avalanches I saw likely failed during the 1st week of January. Stomping around on adjacent drifts revealed nothing but the hardness of the wind-compacted surface.
- Both the southwest and northeast sides of ridgelines were stripped of their snow by previous winds.
- Open terrain had either melt-freeze crusts that barely thawed or wind-stiffened snow. Sheltered terrain had 10-30 cm of soft near-surface facet skiing above 9100 ft. Below 9100 ft., there's a thin, breakable crust on the surface.

High, hazy clouds increased throughout the morning, limiting solar radiation. Winds were light from the west, though there was no blowing snow to be seen. Overall, it was a quiet day in the mountains.
