Kellogg and Wallace High Schools went out to Lookout Pass as part of The Confluence Project, a multi-agency water education collaborative. The objective of the snow science curriculum is to dig snow pits and make snow profile observations and measurements to determine the snow water equivalent (SWE) of the snow pack. The observation location is lower in elevation at 4750' on 20-24° slopes on an east facing aspect. This slope is the directly across the highway from The Training Grounds. A quick compression test was performed and detached at CT18 with progressive compression and then a resistant planar fracture at CT21 happening at the snow ground interface above woody debris, initial wrist and elbow taps were on the harder side (see linked video). General observations from the majority of the snow profiles were: -Total height of the snowpack at this elevation was 65cm (25'') -5-7 distinct layers - A conspicuous ice crust at the 18-20cm depth with softer more recent snow above it. -Snow with increasing density below and a stark visual snow layer boundary with between the upper snowpack and the melt-form icy looking bottom layers of the snow pack.
