Eddies

Skied Eddies yesterday after about 8” of new snow overnight — finally the snow we’ve been missing — and the skiing was awesome, but we hit a few clear red flags... Our party traveled cautiously through some steeper sections, and above treeline we got some woomphing. Around 1800–1900 ft, I (smallest in the group) triggered a decent-sized woomph / collapse on a lower-angled (27 deg) slope. No actual slides were triggered by us nor the one other skier we saw, but the snowpack was definitely not happy up high, so we turned around after that collapse and as we were losing daylight. We noticed some shooting cracks from the skin track in the upper storm snow starting at around ~1600 ft, but the more concerning collapses began with the older buried wind slab sitting on weak facets near the treeline transition at that ~1800’ elev. That old weak layer is still very much alive and seems more reactive than in weeks prior with the added weight of the new snow. Fun turns, but overall unstable in the upper elevations.
