These avalanches usually start as soft slabs or hard slabs, but after they travel 3000’-5000’ vert they turn into wet debris flows. Partly because of the wet snow they entrain as they reach into the low elevations, but also partly due to the shear friction and violence of traveling that far heats up the snow and changes it to a wet debris flow as well.
