Quick report
We dug two pits on Whitefish’s skooks peak; one on a leeward north facing angle about 35 degrees steep, the other on a south facing windward slope with slightly wind sheltered by some trees at an angle of about 25 degrees.
On the first pit, north facing at about 6800 ft, we immediately noticed the persistent weak layer 40 cm down with surface hoar above and below the layer. Our test results showed ECTP23. On the second pit, south facing, we saw the same persistent weak layer and facets about 55 cm down. Again, ECTP23. Both pits had propagating results which was enough for us to take a safer lower angle route down. It’s worth noting that on Monday, another member of our group dug a south facing pit at 6600 ft on the same peak. They observed a failure with a result of ECTP26. The last four days have been warming up so comparing these results was interesting as the snowpack has become just slightly more sensitive.
