Quick report
Close call, triggered a soft slab pretty much all the way across Sluice on the ski down, with a 6-7in crown down to the icy bed surface. Lost footing but managed to self arrest after sliding 15-20 feet with no injuries, put skis back on, and skied out uneventfully. Shared observations and thoughts with several pros on the way out. We knew there would be wind slab concerns and did a number of hand shears and hasty pits on the way up that yielded slight consolidation at the top ~2in, with slightly more down to the icy bed surface. We knew there would be at least some sluff on the way down from the top layer but surprised that the entire slope broke all the way across down to the bed surface. The last 50-100 feet of our boot pack the sun came out, likely affecting the snow. Reflecting on it we definitely should have done more tests as we got higher. Good lessons learned, thankful to walk away unharmed and for all the folks in the area observing and ready to help!
