Fairview Mountain

A very weak, thin snowpack with varying stability. Powder snow overlays a 20-40cm melt freeze crust with large facets and depth hoar to ground in most areas. Total height of snow was 50-80cm deep. Many avalanche slopes were not within threshold. The snow was stable in some places where it had been wind affected, with a finger strength midpack and 4 finger facets underneath. We did a CT with no result on a S facing wind affected convex slope, around 28 degrees. While skinning up a thinner, slightly steeper slope (around 30 degrees, S facing), we encountered whumphing, with cracks appearing 7 meters above us. Suspected weak layer the facets under the MF crust. We turned around and went home after this! The deep persistent slab problem is out there for sure.... Thank you AVCan for your forecasting reports!
