Quick report
We were in Huntington Ravine from about 1130 - 1300 today, Traveling around the Fan area. We observed erratic winds, that were shifting direction and intensity frequently, and were moving a lot of snow around the ravine. Several hand shear tests were done to investigate the new/old snow interface, and the distribution and sensitivity of the new wind slabs. I found in all of my hand pits, about 6 inches of 4F hard snow, overlying about 4 inches of F hard snow, all of which was poorly bonded to the old, refrozen snow. My hand shears produced failures with little force, but failed within the new snow, and didn't show any planar fractures. However, it was clear that the new snow was not well bonded to the old icy snow, and continued wind loading throughout the day, made me concerned about growing wind slabs in the gullies above. These wind slabs seemed to be widely distributed, all across the ravine, although poor visibility made assessing the gullies difficult.
