Collapsing

There was significant collapsing and cracking in the snow above 7000’. The snow depth was at mid elevation was 95cm. There was some new snow falling <1cm/hour and skies were overcast with mainly calm winds. Performed ECT and snowpack failed ECTP14 @ 45cm Q2. This was the layer of concern with the recent storm snow supported by faceted snow and buried surface hoar. We travelled cautiously, mainly stuck to the ridge, decided to ski lower angle slopes than our original objective based on our observations. Overall impressions of the stability were that the snowpack was surprisingly unstable and specific aspects were much less stable than others.
