Quick report
Toured up Bass creek aiming to ski shaded terrain in the Lappi Lake zone. With warm temperatures and full sun, we heard lots of ice and cornice fall on southerly aspects. At one point we heard a very loud boom echo through the canyon, but couldn’t discern the origin of the collapse. North and westerly facing terrain felt stable on the ski in. On the way out we observed multiple areas of wet slide debris in Pinball Wizard and off the south face of Big Joe. The sun stirred up a lot of activity in the mountains today. We dug a west facing pit at 7200’ near the Pokie Wokie chute. Total depth was about 140cm with about 15cm of facets 80cm down. The upper 80cm had a nice right side up structure from fist to one finger density. However our pit test resulted in an ECTP27 and the upper 80cm slid off instantly as the column propagated. The bed surface was extremely planar and consisted of sugary facets. We decided to turn around due to our stability test and that most of the terrain in Lappi was heavily wind and sun affected. Beautiful day in the mountains, but not a great day for skiing.
