Drove in 2WD to upper trailhead, walked to approx 6k where we put skis on. Coverage is still very thin. Toured through a variety of wind crusts and drifts to south gash point where the wind was strong from the southwest and moving snow at ridge tops. Some decent low angle turns near the top led to an interesting exit on skis. At upper elevations small (10-20cm) wind slabs overlay a rain/temp crust sitting atop early season faceted snow. Snow depths at 7500-8k were approx 50cm in sheltered terrain. We did not see any cracking, collapsing, or recent avalanches, but the snowpack is shallow at all elevations and we toured over many hollow sounding slabs on low angle terrain. It will be interesting to see how this current structure reacts to further snow loading with our next storm. It's probably worth waiting for another storm before skiing gash to at least make the ski out nicer on your equipment and knees.
