Updating previous post with better info. Please keep in mind I'm not an expert, just sharing what I saw today. I was on a southeast-facing slope on the Maple Pass Loop, above Rainy Lake, and the snowpack is showing what I think are red flags. I saw clear signs of recent activity. There were numerous loose dry slides (sluffs), likely indicating surface is already unstable and sliding on its own. Again primarily on S, SE facing slopes with direct sunlight. My snow pit confirmed why: The recent Storm Slab, top 4-6 inches was easy-to-trigger with compression test. Did this twice in separate with same results. Buried underneath are two distinct layers of depth hoar, a classic persistent weak layer. I think this would be a "step-down" setup? The small, easy-to-trigger sluffs I'm seeing could have the potential to be the trigger for a much bigger, avalanche on those deep, sugary layers. The snowpack is actively sliding and more unstable than it looks. Be careful out there.
