Elephants Back

We checked snotel temperatures before leaving and still weren't sure what kind of overnight refreeze to expect, or when the best timing might be. Along our approach from Carson Pass, it was clear there had been a true refreeze last night, with firm and supportable conditions even under dense tree cover. There was slightly less supportable snow on aspects that haven't seen numerous melt cycles yet. A cool west wind and localized cloud cover kept surfaces firm until we descended an east aspect with direct sun and less exposure to the wind. 

Many steep slopes had refrozen roller balls and small wet loose activity from previous days, but by our 11am departure, we didn't see any fresh activity today. 

Our exit along Forestdale Creek was also supportable, but the creek itself had lots of open water and collapsing snow bridges. There were plenty of opportunities to cross it today, but that probably won't last long.
