Nebelhorn

    Today we checked out the Nebelhorn area. The weather in the morning was mostly cloudy with moderate winds out of the southwest. Around noon, the snowfall began and the wind slightly increased.  During our tour  we traveled around the compass in search for the persistent weak layer. We dug three pits, one on a north west aspect at 8200 feet, one on an east aspect at 8400 feet, and one on a north aspect at 8700 feet. In all three pits facet layers existed at different depths. Some layers were showing signs of healing and rounding.  However, some of the facets  were still dry and noncompressible. Compression tests did display some planar results but within the extended column tests there was no signs of propagation.  During this time the snowfall continued to be light throughout the afternoon. From 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock, maybe an inch of snow was observed within this time. The wind was transporting snow and blowing it around near the ridgeline and summit. We tried stomping and kicking on a few wind features and had minimal results. Other than that, we observed no other signs of instability or any whumphing during our tour.
