Snowfall ranging from S1 to S3 throughout the morning and early afternoon. Winds on the summit at 8,700' were notably calm. Snow was accumulating on Hwy 89 roadway from Bayview TH at Emerald Bay to a little north of DL Bliss SP during the early afteroon hours as we departed the area.
Snowpack
We noted weakness at the old new snow interface with a weak bond of the new snow to the recent snow from Monday/Monday night. We did not see any surface hoar at this interface in this general area.
Signs of old snow were very limited to nonexistent in this area up to our highpoint of travel at 8,700 on the summit of South Maggies Peak. Recent new snow amounts ranged from 2 to 8 inches. This snow was deposited on bare ground nearly everywhere we looked. In a couple of isolated spots near 8,400' and higher we saw less than 1 cm of old wet snow below the recent new snow. I anticipate that this recent new snow on bare ground will facet over the next week of high pressure.
