South Maggies Peak

Areas of melt noted below 7,000' and on southerly aspects up to 8,700'. Around 7,500' there is 2 inches of continuous snow cover in shaded areas. Above 8,000' I noted up to 6 inches of continuous snow cover in shaded, wind protected areas. I encountered one area of wind drifted snow up to 12 inches deep near the summit. There was some surface slab here, but well bonded to the snow below and unreactive.

Minor amounts of faceting were observed top to bottom in the 15 cm of snowpack at 8,300' on shaded NNE aspect terrain in open below treeline areas. 1 mm early stage faceted crystals were observed, most well developed at the snow surface. All of the snowpack was 4F hard and moist, but not wet. The snow cover above 7,500' has not undergone melt in shaded areas, despite daytime air temperatures in the 40s.
