Mt. Judah

There was decent rain on the windshield when we arrived on Donner Pass at 9 am. Visibility was poor, and we were in light to moderate rain for our morning tour from 9 to 11 am. The top 3 to 4 inches of the snowpack was rain soaked an all aspects up to the summit near 8,200'. Right from the start of our tour, it was easy to trigger large pinwheels 2 to 5 feet in diameter. It was still very much rain with no sign of frozen precipitation near the 8,200' summit, leading us to conclude that the rain/snow line was somewhere above 8,500'. With signs that the wet loose avalanche problem was clearly present, we avoided steep terrain on our exit from the area.

On the plus side, once a decent overnight refreeze occurs, the upper snowpack will make a substantial jump us ahead in the transition to corn.

Signs of wet loose avalanches from yesterday were present.
