Quick report

I did not find any significant signs of instability where I travelled or dug, and when I did find failures, they were in the top 10 inches of the snowpack. I imagine there are still pockets of wind slabs/cornices that are more reactive and could be triggered by a person, particularly as the temps keep rising and the snow becomes less cohesive.

For now, the crusts at the top of the snowpack just make for uninspiring skiing conditions. We will have to wait until after the forecasted warming trend to see how new snow will bond to it.

I saw plenty of roller balls on Poster Ridge but no signs of recent avalanches throughout the day. There appears to be some avalanche debris in the bowl north of Lakes Lookout peak, but it is covered in snow so it is at least 3 days old.

By the time I arrived at 11am, temps were already above freezing and I got a reading as high as 42F. Minimal cloud coverage throughout the day. Winds were calm to light from the SW.

Snowpack

I dug two pits. The first was on a heavily wind-loaded north aspect at 8000', with a total snow height of over 11 feet. In the top 3 feet of snow, I found multiple layers of recent wind slab that seemed to be bonding well together with time and warming temps. I found 1 melt-freeze crust about 10 inches down (presumably a rain crust from the weekend) with a soft slab on top of it. The only test results I got were in the top foot of the snowpack with no propigation.

The second pit I dug was on a West aspect at 8000' where the snow height was about 7 feet. I found the January facets about 2 feet down. These facets appear to be rounding and gaining strength. I did not get any results on this layer in a Column Test or Extended Column Test, but I was able to get failures in shovel shear tests. On top of that layer, I found a right-side up and seemingly solid snowpack. The top 2-3 inches had 2 separate melt-freeze crusts sandwiching a little bit of the new snow from Monday.
