Quick report
Our WAC Avy 2 class dug pits and skied the lower section of Phat Ridge (we topped out at 7800'). It was still storming, but compared to the forecast the winds were much lighter than expected. There was about 2" of new snow that was certainly wind affected in some places, but was still fun to ski. We dug 3 pits close together on a 20 degree slope at 7400' and an ESE aspect. Winds were light coming from the ENE. We conducted CTs, ETCs, and one PST. Total snow depth was 2 meters. Compression test results were CT12 sudden planar, which failed on a decomposing ice crust about 20cm down. ECT (ECTN22) did not propagate across the column. Out of pure curiosity, we conducted a propagation saw test focusing on a ~7cm crust about 50cm into the snowpack and could not get it to propagate (saw went all the way through). Overall a great course with excellent instructors - highly recommend Avy 2 even if you feel pretty experienced. Hanging out with forecasters in our local backcountry area for several days was priceless!
