Ventured out towards Trimmer Peak looking to see how things were shaping up and hoping that the recent snow might be enough for some enjoyable skiing. Along most of the approach we observed a dusting of graupel. Some cracking was observed when skinning across large chaparral but otherwise no signs of instability and no avalanches observed. After fighting through the aspen and birch we started the climb up the glades to the east of the Elevens noting immediately that there were many rocks, stumps, and downed trees uncovered or barely covered. Snow coverage did not improve noticeably as we climbed and, starting around 7800', the leading hiker began triggering whumpfs on every third step. After climbing a bit further we decided that there wasn't good skiing to be had in this location and didn't want to risk triggering a collapse in a pocket of steeper terrain. We managed to find a few fun low angle pockets of skiing on the hike home, but I think this zone might need another 3ft of snow before it's enjoyable. HS as measured near the logpile between the first two gates on High Meadows Rd was 36cm. Whumpfing observed on 25-35 degree N slopes at and around 8000'. Following each whumpf, cracks were visible running 10-30' horizontally. In several locations we observed cracks in the slope above us on the other side of obstacles, possibly indicating that natural collapses had occurred before we arrived or that collapses were travelling across medium size terrain features. A compression test adjacent to a collapse we caused resulted in CT3 SP.

Snowpack

New storm snow is set up for really nice skiing, unfortunately it is sitting on a facet/crust sandwich and is extremely reactive. At the base of the snowpack we observed a stronger layer, possibly compressed or water-logged old faceted snow. Throughout the region we observed a dusting of graupel on top of the snow pack.
