Quick report
Fine day of skiing at the Pass. As advertised, above ~4500, the crust 10-20 cm below the snow surface faded away and disappeared, leading to very nice ski quality. A few convective showers rolled through with graupel as-forecast, but not a lot of graupel-accumulation. Skied mostly west-facing terrain from pass-level to above 5k. Tree skiing was good, open slopes were excellent. Ski-penetration above boot-top at upper elevations in the open. March sunbreaks were sufficient to heat the snow-surface on open slopes a bit -- might be a zipper-crust on some slopes on Sunday. Ridgelines exposed to east-flow seemed to have been scoured down to the crust before 4-6cm of fluff landed atop them. Didn't find much windslab on the west-facing aspects of the same ridgelines -- it was there, but very localized. Instability was limited to loose-dry and it didn't seem to want to run far. Our biggest surprise of the day: skiing a constrained line I've been skiing for ~16 years and encountering a party of ~nine skinning up a terrain-trap that sees a few small skier-triggered avalanches each season. Had conditions been different, we could have sluffed them or worse. If it feels like there's got to be a better option, there usually is. There definitely is in this case. I never would have ever expected to see anyone skin up that route.
