After witnessing a D3 avalanche on 2/27 and with higher avalanche danger, we were curious about similar aspect and snow conditions. Walking up to our selected location, the snow whumpfed. The pit was dug on a South aspect with almost no wind. After seeing the sun on the hillside yesterday, figured it would show the best fasets on yesterday’s surface. Elevation 6220’. Total snow depth at 230 cm. Pit depth at 115 cm, dug to the EFC. Found a sudden collapse CT7@25 cm. Then at CT10@105 cm found a clean planar break. The column did move a little as we did our back cut with the saw. Density test shows a 1F@30 cm as the new snow was 30 cm from yesterday. Snow temps were yet again cold with 115 cm being 30 F and working down to 25 F @80 cm and back up to about 28 F @30 cm. Loud whumpf as we walked to our test pit, before we started digging.

Snowing fairly heavy with gust around 20mph at ridge line. Cornices are leaning N and W on ridge lines. Raining hard at around 3000’.
