Fun day checking out Bald Hills. Good views. Descent from the lookout was relatively wind-affected. Decent--albeit mellow sloped--powder to be found below the NE aspect and en route back to the logging road. Descent further N along the lookout ridge appeared unsafe, with a substantial cornice. Terrain S and W of the lookout appeared considerably wind-affected. Snow pit revealed heavy wind slab through top 40cm sitting on a 10cm layer of hoar powder that compressed and slid with CTH25 (5 shoulder hits). Great day to be oot and aboot while playing it safe.
We dug a single pit on the NE aspect of a ~25-degree angled face around 12 p.m. Weather conditions were sunny, slightly below freezing, with virtually no wind. CTM25 resistant compression release (with 5 shoulder hits) about 40cm down that compressed a 10cm layer of depth hoar. There is also a thin ice facet layer about 80cm down that appears relatively stable.
