We skinned out to an open avalanche path and got a disconcerting whoompf very quickly. Felt like the whole slope shifted slightly, so we skied back to safety in the trees and dug a pit to see what was going on. We tried to isolate a column but only had ski poles to cut out the back. While back-cutting the column the upper 40cm of newish snow popped and dropped. Failure layer was a ~1 inch faceted crust. Further shovel shears showed very easy results with propagation. Two very obvious weak layers in the snowpack ~40 and 80cm down in this area. We turned around and skied back to the car.
