Quick Observation
Our objective this morning was Zupjok Peak. Ascending the SW shoulder and skiing the NE aspect. We travelled between 1200 - 1750m’s. Temps were as forecasted. 40cm’s of HST in areas unaffected by wind. Leeward aspects held significantly more, in some cases 60cm’s~. Winds were calm in the valley but sustained moderate gusting strong by 1500m’s. We observed widespread diffusion of wind transported with how significant the winds were. Pole probes showed a uniform density profile. Hand shears in the storm snow showed no slab consolidation or cohesive properties in terrain travelled. We observed no signs of instability throughout our travels. Solar slopes showed an annoyingly inconsistent sun crust (~2cm’s thick) that was not supportive to skier traffic. The day was overcast and at times obscured making particulars challenging though we observed one avalanche on the unammed peak immediately east of Zupjok. South facing, steep terrain. Suspected to be natural - Sz 2~ wet loose from Monday or Tuesdays warm temps and sun.
