Quick Observation
Spirits were high and the tide was low on our first field day of the season! To get a grip on our current snow conditions and get our brains back in the snow, we headed up the Strathcona Parkway. Currently, the snowline is roughly 800 m, but more like 1000+ m to travel without fear of damaging gear. The precip we saw over the weekend and into Monday has created a 1-3 cm crust layer on all aspects and elevations. Snow depth varies but is roughly 40 - 100 cm. The good news is the crust was supportive to skis/boards. Yet travel was not overly pleasant to say the least - early season slip, trip, and fall hazards still exist. Alpine avalanche start zones across the Valley in the Vancouver Island range appear to be at threshold. This means they now have enough coverage to produce avalanches when new snow does arrive. We are super excited to be back for another season, keep praying to Üllr!
