Quick report

A quick trip to the Surprise Meadow weather station revealed more of the same story from this unseasonable shoulder season; a thin snowpack above an 8300' snowline. 40cm's at the weather station at 9580'. While snow is continuous above 8200', many obstacles are present and the decision to hike and not carry skis was confirmed.

Snowpack

Of note, the rain crust that has been widespread in observations from the west side of the Tetons and zones to the south was not seen at 9500' around Surprise lake. Sunny aspects harbor a melt-freeze from around 8200' to 9500' but mostly soft snow on shady aspects above 9000' with a combination of facets and rounds in the approximately 40 cm snowpack found in sheltered trees around the weather station.
