There was a break in the rainy weather. Cooler temps, light winds, and no precip.
Snowpack
A mostly supportable, but also breakable, crust coupled with abundent runnels and soft moist snow below made for very challenging over snow travel today.
- 120 cm hight of snow on wind loaded NE aspect at 6,400'. Stout mostly supportable rain crust caps rain moistened snowpack below. Ski penetration is an inch or two, but croch deep boot penetration. Compression Tests popped with hard force 15cm from ground at interface with rotting faceted old snow.
- 50cm hight of snow near ridge on west aspect at 6,400'. Two inche stoute rain crust over decomposing fragments failed on isolation in Compression Test.
Avalanche
Numerouse D1-1.5 storm slabs observed from a distance with the crowns at 6100 to 6400 feet elevation. These were overrun with runnels, indicating they occured before or early on in rain event. the 12/8-9 atmospheric river. One wet loose was observed at approximately 5500ft on a NE aspect.
